Massachusetts Spinal Cord & Back Injuries

Boston Spinal Cord and Back Injury Lawyers

Ranging from mild to severe and caused by any number of factors, back and spine injuries can be difficult to deal with and to understand. Moreover, because many back injuries are long-term or have significant effects, the cost of treating them can quickly pile up. At Feinberg & Alban PC, a qualified and experienced Boston spine injury attorney can help you discuss your options for collecting compensation following an accident or incident that may leave you hurt, impaired, or disabled.

Causes of back and spinal cord injuries

Most back and spinal cord injuries result from collision, impact, or other accident, or by excessive or repetitive motion. While automobile accidents are a leading cause of back and spinal cord injuries, certain labor-related occupations—such as those in construction—put workers at greater risk for back injury. Common causes of back and spine injury include the following:

  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Other traumas
  • Heavy repetitive lifting
  • Static posture (sitting or standing)
  • Repetitive bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, or lifting
  • Slips, trips, and falls
  • Twisting and lifting
  • Excessive vibration while driving (such as for truck drivers)
  • Fatigue or poor muscle endurance, due to excessive overtime or an unreasonable work-to-rest ratio

Oftentimes, especially with labor-related injuries, there is not one specific incident that causes back injury, but rather a gradual build-up of harmful activities or motions. Victims of this type of injury have equal rights to pursue compensation as those involved in accidents, falls, and other traumas. A Boston construction lawyer from Feinberg & Alban PC can provide further information.

Diagnosing back and spine injuries

Diagnosis for spine and back injuries typically involves one of the following three forms of radiographic imaging:

  • X-ray. An X-ray can provide information on fractures of vertebrae, and is usually the first imaging test performed. However, if a physician believes that the injury may be neurological, other types of images will be necessary.
  • CT scan. CT, or computed tomography, is a similar image to an X-ray, but provides more detail, such as the ability to detect very small fractures and tears and neurological damage. Additionally, a CT scan can be performed on the head.
  • MRI. MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, detects injuries involving intervertebral discs, spinal ligaments, and paraspinal soft tissues. Additionally, it is easier to identify epidural hematomas with an MRI than with a CT scan.

Treatment

Treatment for back and spinal injuries is largely dependent on the nature of the injury. Unfortunately, certain spinal cord injuries are impossible to heal. But regardless of the treatment cycle ahead, it can be a long and costly road. An attorney can help you seek coverage that allows for continued management of long-term conditions.
