Staying in Shape – and Safe

Walking and jogging are great ways to stay in shape and get some fresh air. But it is important, especially when you are out at night or in a bad neighborhood in Massachusetts, to stay safe. Keeping some safety tips in mind when you’re out for a walk or job can help prevent accidents and avoid danger.

Listed below are some excellent safety tips to be aware of when you’re out for a walk or jog:

  • Be visible. First and foremost, wear bright reflective clothing if you are out at night. Pedestrian accidents usually occur when the driver of a vehicle doesn’t see a walker or jogger on the side of the road. Therefore, you want to make yourself as visible as possible so that oncoming cars will spot you a long way off. It also helps to carry a light source, such as a flashlight.
  • Use sidewalks when you can and when there aren’t any, stay as far from the road as possible. Try to cross streets only at intersections and cross streets.
  • Stay alert. Although many people listen to music or talk on their cell phones when out walking and jogging, these distractions will limit your reaction time.
  • Bring a phone. Although you may be tempted to leave your phone at home so that it does not affect your exercise, you never know when an emergency might occur, so it’s best to bring it along.
  • Always carry identification: Keep your license and medical insurance card with you at all times.

There is no reason to be afraid of leaving the house for a walk or jog around the neighborhood, but it does help to be cautious. Aside from the previous safety tips, always let someone know where you’re going just in case something unexpected happens.
